A mish-mash of things:

I saw a beautiful movie recently called Wolfwalkers. Just a gorgeous little animated movie that I definitely recommend. The art was such a breath of fresh air.

Almost done with Superman also; I watch movies in bits and pieces sometimes, especially if they're on the longer side.

I don't work Thursday, Friday or Sunday, and since Oktoberfest is this weekend, my work is going to be closed on Saturday, giving me a four-day weekend!

Oktoberfest is famously a really huge deal in La Crosse, but like. I do not plan to go anywhere near it if I can handle it, because it is a literal nightmare. Blair's friends who have lived in this area for awhile recounted Oktoberfests past, and it doesn't sound great. This is a college town and we live downtown, and there are three different campuses around us. According to the tales, there are hundreds of college kids just blind drunk all the time, everywhere, sleeping on the sidewalks and staggering in the streets. Car accidents around every corner. Puke and trash and abandoned clothing everywhere, people toileting in the street, getting into fights, even breaking into peoples' homes and cars. That's a nah from me dawg.

They're college kids who are drinking all the time already anyway. I don't understand why they need to get so belligerent and idiotic for these specific four days.

It runs Thursday through Sunday. Blair has to work and go to class Thursday and Friday, but other than that we do not plan to be out and about except for Friday evening, when her parents have invited us over for dinner (in another city). Saturday we're driving all the way to Rochester, Minnesota to do some shopping (the nearest Trader Joe's is over an hour away, but we're going, and we're returning home with a HUGE haul), and then Sunday we've got DnD at our place.

I received my first paycheck from my new job, which felt great, but I still haven't figured out the licensing situation yet. I should, uh. Probably get to that.

I have been trying to nurture the small smoldering spark of creativity within me, hoping to write something soon. I really want to contribute to Fandom Gift Basket.

I've been feeling very... domestic. I work less than Blair does. I'm home more, so I do more to care for the apartment. I'm always vacuuming and doing loads of laundry. I cook a lot, do the dishes, take out the trash, and pack her lunches for her, which I very much enjoy. I never imagined myself living this sort of life, but I really like taking care of her and of our home.

But! I feel like I cook a lot of the same things over and over, just because there are certain dishes we're quite happy with. I'd love to branch out and start doing something different! If anyone's got any favorite recipes they'd like to share, I'd love to check 'em out!

brandish

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 24, 2025 is:

brandish • \BRAN-dish\  • verb

To brandish something, such as a weapon, is to wave or swing it in a threatening or excited manner.

// Squeals of laughter erupted as three children brandishing squirt guns rounded the corner of the house.

See the entry >

Examples:

“The dancers are young men from the neighborhoods dressed in dark robes accented by bright yellow, red and blue accessories and tall, maroon hats called Tkoumbout adorned with silver jewelry. The men’s dances and women’s chants have been passed down through generations. Children participate in the festivities by mimicking the older performers. Boys brandish miniature swords and scarves in their small hands and girls stand with the female drummers.” — Audrey Thibert, The Associated Press, 1 July 2025

Did you know?

The word brandish is often paired with a word for a weapon, such as knife or handgun. The link between brandish and weaponry is present in the word’s etymology: brandish comes ultimately from a Germanic word meaning “sword.” Since the word’s 14th century introduction to the English language (by way of Anglo-French) weapons have commonly been the things brandished, but also extensive is the use of brandish with things that are wielded to defeat in other ways, such as banners and placards used in the war of ideas. One can even brandish something that isn’t physical, such as a law or one’s intellect. In that case, you are figuratively waving the thing in someone’s face so that it cannot be ignored.

So, I heard credible information today that my state bosses are looking through university system employees' social media accounts. You know why. I do not have and have never had any social media accounts outside of LJ, DW, and AO3 (well, and Goodreads, but I have no qualms about that account). I just bit the bullet and deleted my LJ, which I should have done a decade ago or whenever it was that we all migrated. I think it's unlikely that my DW or AO3 would be discovered, but it's not completely impossible. My DW no longer has any pictures on it because I deleted them all when photobucket exploded.

So, advice:

1. Should I set my existing DW to private and then all future entries to access locked? I wish like hell DW had the option to mass access lock entries, but they don't, only to mass set them to private. :( I don't relish trying to go through 21 years of entries since I imported all my LJ entries from before I started posting here.

2. Should I set all my fic on A03 to registered users, which fortunately can be done by bulk editing rather than individual post?

A little while ago I got Stable cortical body maps before and after amputation via an NIH press release; today it was *Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in people with chronic disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis...

... which dovetails neatly with the bits I just got out of The Painful Truth (Monty Lyman) about the bidirectional relationship between insomnia and pain, where each worsens the other but insomnia worsens pain more. (It's bedtime, so I'm not going to pick the book back up to get you those onward references just now.) With n = 5232, and their conditions including "cancer, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and stroke", "CBT-I was associated with significantly improved outcomes" (for insomnia severity, and moderately improved outcomes for sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency).

What'll be next? WHO KNOWS.

(that's after i had fun nerding out and explaining to my minion team the very basic mathematical concepts to common photoshop filters like multiply/overlay plus some rudimentary light bounce physics learned from game rendering engines)

would my Framework charge if plugged into one outlet but not another? I tested the outlet from which it did not charge and it works for other devices.

[Update]

I shut it down for an hour and everything works again.

Had a good evening, but a rough night. Baby was in a fine mood and went to bed early, I got to eat German things for dinner, and I got to bed at a reasonable hour.

Then in the middle of the night I woke up suddenly because it felt like I had inhaled some sort of angry particle. It felt just like when you inhale a piece of spicy food, and it started a coughing fit which, somehow, did not wake the baby. I stumbled to the bathroom, coughing so hard it made me eventually throw up a few times. -_- So that was fun. It eventually passed, and I still have no idea what it was.

The rest of the night I was either too hot or too cold, so I slept fitfully and woke up exhausted. Blah.

No big plans for today, or for the rest of the week really. We're sort of coasting right now, which is kind of nice.
